IVAN KALMAR

In recent years, I have been expanding my work on illiberalism, peripheralization, and racialization in general and specifically in Europe. I focus on the East of the European Union in particular, but my work challenges regional boundaries and my most recent research includes other peripheral areas of the EU, particularly in the South (my SSHRC-supported research has 10 field sites in the Baltics, Central Europe, Greece, Italy, and Spain). My current focus is on economic nationalism, and I investigate the class alliance that develops in support of illiberal movements and economic protectionism, between elements of labor and small business and elements of high capital.

At the same time, I continue research on the parallel images of Muslims and Jews in Western cultural history.
